When first joining a gym/fitness center, how much is too much and what is a resonable monthly payment?

- This all depends on where you are. Last time I signed up I paid $150 and $27 a month, since then I have learned that, that is too much. I would say a sign-up of of less that $100 and a monthly payment of less than $20 is reasonable.
- Depends on where you live. Many gyms want you to lock you into a long term contract, offering $40 per month if you sign up for 1-2 years. Then they have the balls to ask for $100-200 sign up fee (salesperson commission). If you want to go with a month-to-month plan and no contract they have no problem asking $70-80 per month. I suggest look at Yahoo yellow pages and visit all the gyms within a reasonable driving direction. Don't sign up with a gym more than 2-3 miles from where you live or work (unless you have no choice), because it will make it harder to go. I found a great (smaller) gym that only charges $33 per month or $25 if you pay for the year. No contract, no sign up fee. Do your homework and try some of the gyms out before you lock yourself into a contract. They all offer a few day trial membership.
- It will depend a lot on the facilities, your area and the package offered. 1. Are you going to take classes - many gyms offer yoga, pilates etc classes. Some gyms offer free classes for all members, some offer a tiered membership program. 2. Access to pool - is it gym only or pool ? 3. Access to instructors - are you on your own or are there instructors to give you a free consultation ( usually a $50 value) Usually YMCAs offer a good deal.
