Is it true that doing group exercises at a fitness club would make me less shy?
My mom thinks it would.

- She's probably right. Martial Arts or Dance Classes are likely to have the same effect, because most group activities let you see other people having fun and interacting (even 'disciplined' activities can be fun, if you enjoy improving your ability and learning new things). That 'atmosphere' makes you want to be more 'proactive' instead of hanging back. A Drama group is even better for overcoming shyness, because a lot of the 'games' are designed to make people more confident. Even very 'extroverted' people can suddenly become shy when they have to perform on stage in front of an audience, so for any kind of performing arts it's important to be able to overcome this reaction.
